SHOULD I USE ICE OR HEAT FOR MY BACK PAIN?

If you’re asking “ice vs heat for back pain”, the answer is: it depends on your type of pain and its cause. Heat and ice both influence tissue differently; heat increases blood flow and relaxes muscles, while ice can numb pain and may help with early swelling. These therapies are used as short-term pain relievers, particularly heat for muscle-related back discomfort.

WHEN SHOULD I USE HEAT?

Heat therapy is safe and most effective when your back pain involves muscle tightness, stiffness, or ongoing achiness, common in people with issues like postural strain, sedentary work habits, or chronic low back pain. Heat increases local circulation, helps muscles relax, and can reduce stiffness, which may improve range of motion and comfort. Combining heat massage with therapy like Chiropractic is shown to improve pain and function in people with common musculoskeletal complaints like neck pain and lower back pain. Use heat for medium-long term pain, stiffness after sitting, or muscle tension.

WHEN SHOULD I USE ICE?

Ice is traditionally recommended for short-term (acute) injuries or irritations that are recent (within the first 72 hours), especially if there was a sudden movement or strain. Cold temporarily numbs the area and can reduce swelling and the sensation of pain. However, research into ice’s effectiveness on low back pain is less conclusive than for heat, and high-quality recent trials are limited. Use ice if your back pain began suddenly, feels sharp, or you notice local sensitivity right after an activity.

How we can help

HOW WE CAN HELP

While ice and heat can ease symptoms, they don’t fix the root cause of back pain. Conditions like muscle strain, facet joint irritation, disc issues, and chronic stiffness need proper assessment.

At Fortitude Chiropractic, we evaluate your symptoms through a thorough history and physical exam, and tailor a plan best suited for you. You can expect modalities like spinal adjustments, soft-tissue therapy, trigger point dry needling and cupping. We will also create a tailored rehabilitation plan that goes beyond temporary relief, incorporating education, strengthening, and movement retraining so you can get lasting back pain improvement, not just a quick fix.
