How to Improve Posture While Sitting

What is posture AND DOES IT MATTER?

We’ve all heard the common advice to “sit up straight” or to “stop slouching” as it can affect our posture, but what exactly is posture, how does it impact us and our health and how to improve posture while sitting?

Posture is the position in which we hold our body, it can vary depending on which positions we are in (such as while sitting down at the desk, or standing up to wait in a queue). Posture can play an important role in our physical health, as prolonged periods of sitting in a certain position can often place a high load of stress on our spine (eg. sitting slouched or having a forward head posture).

FIVE TIPS ON HOW TO IMPROVE POSTURE WHILE SITTING

1) Support your spine:
Sit with your back supported by your chair, with the shoulders retracted

2) Keep your feet grounded:
Adjust the height of your seat (or table) to ensure your feet are flat on the ground.

3) Adjust your screen level:
Keeping your screen at your eye-level will reduce excessive strain on the neck

4) Try using an ergonomic keyboard/mouse:
Having ergonomic supplies can often reduce the strain on our arms and shoulders.

5) Take regular breaks to move around:
Most importantly, remember to keep moving – the best posture is your next posture!
