DOES HEAT HELP WITH LOW BACK PAIN?
Low back pain is the most common musculoskeletal issue affecting individuals, it can range from mild discomfort to severe pain which hinders daily tasks and activity. A popular tool for alleviating low back pain is heat therapy, but does it help with low back pain?
HOW DOES HEAT HELP WITH LOW BACK PAIN?
Heat therapy is a useful remedy for low back pain, due to an increase in blood flow to the affected area helping to relieve tense muscles, improve mobility and promote healing. Usually, heat is applied to areas that have been in pain for longer periods of time, this could mean over a period of hours, days or months.
SHOULD I USE ICE OR HEAT FOR MY LOW BACK PAIN?
Both heat and cold modalities are effective tools in pain management, but are utilised at different stages of injuries.
Ice is an effective strategy after an injury occurs (acute onset) to utilise its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, it does this by constricting blood vessels to help reduce inflammation and prevent excessive swelling. Heat is recommended for longer-term pain (chronic) or after the initial swelling subsides.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE HEAT ON MY LOW BACK?
It’s recommended to utilise a heat in moderation through heat sources such as a heat-pack, warm towel, or hot water bottle. Applying heat to an affected area should be for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, while monitoring the skin’s response to avoid overheating or irritation.
WILL HEAT HELP PREVENT LOW BACK PAIN?
While heat therapy is widely considered an effective tool to relieve low back pain, this doesn’t mean it will prevent low back pain from occurring in the future. Preventing low back pain typically requires a holistic approach, here are some examples known to help prevent low back pain:
- Low back and core strengthening exercise
- Mobility Exercises
- Postural and ergonomic considerations
- Weight management
