Why is my Back Stiff in the Morning?

Waking up with a stiff back or lower back stiffness is very common. Many people experience morning back stiffness even without any diagnosed condition. In most cases, it happens because your spine behaves differently overnight. While you sleep, spinal tissues change in fluid content and movement patterns. When you get up and start moving, these changes gradually reverse, and stiffness usually eases.

What cAUSES MORNING STIFFNESS?

Normal morning stiffness
Your spine experiences natural changes throughout the day. When you are upright and active, the discs between your vertebrae slowly lose fluid due to gravity and movement. While lying down at night, the pressure is reduced, and the discs reabsorb fluid. This can slightly increase disc height and internal pressure, making your lower back feel stiff or less flexible in the morning.

Muscles, ligaments, and joints also stay relatively still while you sleep, which can temporarily increase stiffness. Most people notice that stiffness eases within 15 to 30 minutes of moving, stretching, or showering.

Stiffness from common conditions
Some health conditions can also contribute to morning stiffness, especially when inflammation is involved:

  • Inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis) often causes stiffness lasting longer than 30 minutes and may include joint swelling, heat, or pain.
  • Osteoarthritis can also cause morning stiffness, though it usually settles faster once you start moving.
  • Prolonged or worsening stiffness, especially with multiple joints affected, swelling, or fatigue, may require further assessment by a health professional.

IS MY MORNING STIFFNESS NORMAL?

If your stiffness improves within 30 minutes of movement and is not accompanied by redness, swelling, or severe pain, it is usually a normal mechanical response to rest. Overnight inactivity and spinal fluid changes are the most common causes in otherwise healthy people.

Stiffness that persists, affects multiple joints, or worsens over time should be checked by a professional to rule out underlying conditions.
