What Causes FAI Hip Impingement?
Experiencing hip and groin pain when kicking? You could potentially be dealing with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). FAI is a condition that affects the hip joint and is common amongst athletes involved in sports requiring hip movement like soccer, dancing, AFL or martial arts.
FAI manifests from long term repetitive trauma occurring from excessive movements of the hip usually required in sport, this creates a change in the structure of bone at the ball-and-socket joint of the hip. It is commonly seen in teenagers and in individuals participating in these certain sports over many years.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF FAI?
What causes FAI hip impingement? There are two types of FAI that can occur, called CAM and PINCER deformity. A CAM deformity is most commonly seen in males, which affects the long bone of the upper leg (femur). The changes seen is a layering extra bone at the femur to combat the repetitive abutting of force during hip movements. PINCER deformity are commonly seen in females, where the socket (acetabulum) of the pelvic portion of the hip abnormally covers too much of the head of the femur, causing further abutment of the two bones. It is also possible to have both types, known as combined deformity.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF FAI?
Common symptoms of FAI include:

- Pain in the groin area, especially when the hip is flexed (bringing your knee to your chest) – through movements such as kicking, squatting or sitting for prolonged periods.

- Pain radiating to the outside of the hip, thigh or buttock.

- Stiffness and reduced range of motion in the hip – with or without pain.

HOW TO FIX FAI and hip impingement?
Treatment of FAI can vary depending on the severity of the condition, and early diagnosis is crucial in managing FAI to prevent further damage.
